Subjunctive: Conclusion |
The subjunctive appears to be in essence a future marker.
Its core meanings are those of prediction and intent: epistemic and
deontic meanings. |
|
|
Epistemic readings are more commonly found in the third
person, while deontic meanings are more commonly found in the first
person. The meanings are therefore not sharply distinguishable. |
|
From these core meanings, two performative meanings develop:
hortative from the first person, and negative directive from the second
and third person. |
